Robert Desnos was born on July 4, , in Paris. He attended commercial college, then worked as a clerk before becoming a literary columnist for the newspaper Paris-Soir. In he published his first book, Rrose Selavy , a collection of surrealistic aphorisms. Breton, in the Manifesto of Surrealism, , singled out Desnos for particular praise.
The technique involved drifting into a trance and then recording the associations and leaps of the subconscious mind. Their poignancy is even greater, I think, when you read how they came to be. The artist met and became friends with Desnos, perhaps the most beloved and influential surrealist writer, in , and before long, they made plans to collaborate on a livre d'artist.
Desnos' bold criticism of the latter led to his imprisonment in Theresienstadt , and he died at age 45 shortly after his release in It was his first work in prose, which was written in Morocco in but remained unpublished until this posthumous collaboration.

He played a pivotal role in the "Surrealist Revolution" journal, publishing 12 issues between and Desnos believed surrealism to be incompatible with political affiliations. He subsequently aligned himself with Georges Bataille and found new avenues for his creativity in journalism and radio broadcasting.
He was apprehended by the Gestapo in February and endured several concentration camps, including Buchenwald. Despite the harrowing conditions, he continued to compose poetry, but these works were sadly lost. His first book, Rrose Selavy, published in , was a collection of surrealistic aphorisms. Early works reflect his imaginative and fanciful love of word play.
In , he committed and challenged himself to writing a poem a day. His work became more structured as he matured and gave up the many excesses of his youth, which included drug experimentation. Although his writing was still adventurous, it was less obscure, while retaining its distinctive and lyrical rhythms.
He married the former Lucie Badoul, nicknamed "Youki" "snow" by her ex-husband, the painter Tsugaharu Foujita. One of Bresnos' most famous poems is "Letter to Youki," written after his arrest. In , he composed The Night of Loveless Nights, a lyric poem about solitude, curiously written in classic-like quatrains, more similar to Charles Baudelaire than Breton.
During this early creative period, Desnos idolized entertainer, Yvonne George, a popular cabaret singer, who was also a part of the Parisian cultural milieu. His return to formalism and more mainstream writings are most likely what set him apart from other surrealist writers.
He became further alienated from them due to their increasing association with Marxism. The nexus between Marxist economic ideals and the philosophy of the "beloved imagination" of surrealism, seemingly companionable, would prove to be fragile. And Desnos, always an independent thinker, refused to subject himself to 'party dictates.
