Hiro Hayashi. Before I read this book, I just heard of Malcolm X. I didn't know who he was or what he did that made him such a popular figure in the civil rights movement, but after reading this book it made me realize why he was a person that was looked upon.

He fought for education and the freedom that we all deserve and fighting equality for African Americans. This book again made me realize that not everyone has the same privileges as I do. Short introduction to Malcolm X. Appealing to have it in graphic novel format, but it is so brief that it reads like an abstract of a life, rather than a compelling biography.
Some of the panels are laid out in a confusing manner, as well, but I do think this works well as a teaser for kids to tempt them into learning more about his life and work. Miroku Nemeth. Just go be clear, the graphic novel portion of this very brief book is only 27 pages long. It is good in many ways, especially the way in which it starts in media res with Malcolm X going for the Hajj pilgrimage, which changed his life.

Do not recommend listening on audible. This was a great graphic novel I read with my kiddo. I do think there just could have been more added, but it was a great quick educational one that had her attention.

Kayla Woerdeman. Definitely better suited for children. Pretty sanitized version of a militant man's life. Educators seeking vibrant material, as well as young Americans besotted with contemporary pop culture should snatch up copies of this brilliant volume. Helfer's text draws heavily on The Autobiography , which Malcolm X wrote with Alex Haley, and DuBurke's realistic art, in black and white, with an average of six frames per page, visualizes the political struggle as well as the inner anger and turmoil.
Far from reverential, the account includes chapters on Malcolm X's life as a hustler and his own disturbing racism. Close-up images, all set against a backdrop of the civil rights movement, capture crucial events in Malcolm's life: the teacher who tells him that as a black he can never be a lawyer, his passionate reading in the prison library, and his conversion to Islam.
There is no interaction between visuals and words. The whole thing is an exercise in eye strain and boredom. Malcolm X deserves a better 'graphic biography'. Might I suggest approaching the good people at Tara Books to commission one? This comic is used more to tell the life of Malcolm X. Since I have never been very fond of history, this was extremely boring to me.
It was hard for me to read this comic.
If you are a fan of history then you may like this comic, but if you don't really care for it don't pick this up. I would recommend this comic mainly to people who like history and want to learn more about Malcolm X. Sidik Fofana. Author 2 books followers. One of the best graphic novels I've read. The same drawings that make Malcolm X's youth so vivid can't portray the political in-fighting with the same clarity, giving instead a glance at the last few years of his life.
Jennifer Sundt. Books like this should be required reading in school. Books like these can help kids understand that learning American history can be, despite popular belief, an intense and engaging experience. This man, though - his story is complicated. His force of will is powerful, immensely so, and it feels throughout that he struggled with where to direct it, especially as his religious leader so flagrantly falls from grace and his world falls apart around him.
Even with this book, I don't think I have scratched the surface of what he was about, which goes to show what reading still I need to do. This book, in this way, proves helpful for extreme beginners to the topic like myself. It's a quick read and more of a gateway piece than the be-all authority on his life's timeline. I'm fine with that for now.
Malcolm X was a Muslim civil rights activist in the 60's and he was murdered. He was murdered because of his view points. I used this book as a resource for a research project, and it was definitely very informative. Even if you aren't doing a research project i feel as if it would be a good book to it sit down and read, especially if you're into historic books.

This book was a long read, for a graphic novel. I can honestly tell you that my neck was hurting after i read it. Once you start the book you can't stop. I personally wouldn't have read it if i didn't need it for my project. Either way i enjoyed it.

Anyway, if you need this book for research on Malcolm X i would definitely use this as a source, or to read in your free time about the civil rights movement and the effects it had on the Black Muslim community.
An interesting book. The images synced with the text pretty well and gave interesting information about Malcolm X who I knew nothing about before reading this. The beginning of the book had me intrigued the entire time to find out more about this person named Malcolm X.
