It is fair to start this review by saying I am a huge Manchester United fan so for me this book has a special feel. The book shows a unique sense of humour to Sir Alex Ferguson which was never very evident in his time on TV during interviews and matches. This book has been well quoted in the media. I have to say after reading it the quotes of course are accurate but highly taken out of context.
The well quoted opinions on Beckham and Rooney although accurate are largely taken out of context.

What is missing from these quotes are the other highly supportive and complimentary opinions which Sir Alex includes. Of course positives don't sell as many papers and in all honestly may not have sold so many copies of the book itself. The book details certain players and events in Sir Alex's managerial career. Although not chronological this is a fascinating insight to one of the most successful mangers ever.
Mixed within the fact and opinions about Manchester United are antidotes and facts that will keep any football fan interested irregardless of which team you support. This book took me longer to read than normal mainly because of the wealth of information that has to be digested. There were moments when I found myself realising that Sir Alex was talking about a match I had actually seen.
As well as events you expect to be covered such as The Class of 92 and The David Beckham Boot Incident there are also other smaller events that are just as entertaining and were never reported in the media. This is an amazing insight into one of the most successful football clubs and one of the most successful managers ever. For anyone who is interested in management, football or the man himself, this is a must read.
I guess I'm not in the mood to write a long review as I should probably do, and since I will be biased anyway reviewing this book as I'm a long-life Manchester United fan, I will settle down this time with these images as part of the review. I'm as far from a fan of Alex Ferguson from the point of view of what he stood for for decades in English football, being the most successful manager of recent times at the club I support's biggest rivals, but I've long grudgingly admired his achievements as a manager, and have enjoyed several extended interviews with him over the years, so when this came up as a Daily Deal a while back, it was a no brainier for me to buy it.
Focussing primarily on the years since his last autobiography which was published in , the book recounts his side of many stories that made the news over the years, along with many that didn't, and unsurprisingly, he comes across as an articulate, intelligent, driven person - strong willed to the point of arrogance some might say though this is explained in his philosophy - and as a result, the book is far above the standard of the usual sports biography that I've read in the past.
His standing within the wider world since his retirement from football management is high - seen in the success of Leading: Learning from Life and My Years at Manchester United , and his prominence on the lecture circuit - and from what I can see, it's something that is well deserved. A great read and one that I will follow up with by reading the first volume of his autobiography as well as the book mentioned above.

I was pleased to see that this book wasn't Managing My Life part II and for the most part only focused on the last 10 years of Sir Alex's career seeing as most of his life previous to that was covered in his first book. I enjoyed reading his thoughts about some of the main events in his Manchester United career over the past ten-twelve years or so and the inside stories he had on such influential people at the club such as Roy Keane and Cristiano Ronaldo.
I enjoyed reading the inside information he was able to give on significant events over the past few years such as both Keane and Ronaldo's departure from the club, his reaction to Manchester City winning the league and how he handled being defeated in the and European Champion's League finals. Sir Alex is a very intelligent individual and the English game will never see the likes of him again.
Being a huge Manchester United fan I was always going to be buying this book as I've been looking forward to it for some time. Not quite as deep and as thorough as Managing My Life yet a thoroughly interesting read nonetheless and definitely worth the money spent. Henrique Rodrigues. It was fun reading this, but I only recommend it to people who are really that interested on some extra bits and pieces of Man United or general footballing geekiness. Tanzir Islam. This is a really really good book for any football enthusiast. I didn't really expect that SAF would be so blatantly telling the facts. It felt he spoke his mind out in the book as openly as possible.
It really gives a great insight into the golden era of Manchester United and took me back to my childhood memories instantly.

The writing was fluent. The only thing that was bad about the book was that there were too many jumps from one topic to another with very little similarity in context. I would say reading this book felt almost like I was talking to SAF directly. I've always held him in very high regards from the very beginning in spite of him being a direct rival to my club Arsenal.
And this book illustrated the chapters of the life of this extra ordinary manager in a great way. Without doubt, this is one of the best books I've ever read. A good read, that just falls short of being great. Many aspects of Sir Alex's life outside of football, just don't come across as being very interesting. The football stuff is written very well, and that forms a large majority of the book.
However potential readers should know that Sir Alex is both an admirable and a divisive character with many friends and foes. There is a dark cloud of negativity that emanates forth from this character at certain points in the book. Overall, I would highly recommend this book for football fans, people who are not fans of the sport may not derive the same pleasure from it.

Abhinav Athreya. Honest assessment of Alex Ferguson's time in charge at Manchester United. You have to read between the lines but his account at the helm of United for 26 years presents a great lesson in organizational management. I don't watch or follow football, but I was interested by the lifestory of this manager. His humble origins in a family of Glasgow shipyard workers were explained.
This background coloured his football playing career, with his manager asking what religion his wife was and where they had been married. After moving cities a few times, retiring from playing and assuming coaching roles then team management, Alex became successful and took on the major challenge awaiting anyone brave enough; the well-paid, heavy-drinking and ageing Manchester United team some did not fall in those categories.
The pattern of encouraging young players and nursing older injured ones will be familiar to many people, and Alex speaks most highly of Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs and David Beckham, the latter two coming up through youth teams. What I find it hardest to get my head around is paying the equivalent of a major firm's annual output to acquire a man to kick a ball.
The story of not having enough funds available, the manager being paid far less than the players etc. This was entirely a masculine environment so I was pleased to see Sir Alex as he became, giving credit to his wife for her support. Some great photos appear in batches through the book.
Readers interested in sports generally, or in the social history of UK, would get on well with this detailed, well-written book by Alex and a sports journalist. This is an unbiased review. A break from my usual reading fayre, reading the first autobiography of the most successful manager of the modern football era, which was fascinating in many ways, if a little too drawn up by the last pages or so.

In a community that relies heavily on a single industry, there is an intensity of shared experience that draws people together and tends to make them appreciate the need to support one another. It has been said that the values great managers like Jock Stein, Sir Matt Busby, Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley brought to their jobs in football were rooted in their mining background.

Published just after the treble it gives you a great insight into the man from his childhood right up to winning it all on that brilliant night in Barcelona. You get a real sense of Ferguson and what makes him tick and he takes you right back through time chronologically including his own playing days and early jobs in management.
Good to read about the wonderful things he did in Scotland too. He talks of how the games changed and times passed, family values and they are the ones he carries into his working life. My only gripe is that it was written so long ago and he's done so much more since then!! I hope he updates it once he finally retires from the Old Trafford hotseat! Reading this I am amazed by Sir Alex's intelligence, honesty and thoughtfulness. He is a very articulate writer and I found it engrossing.
