To add a bit of zest and zing to this entertainment, more often than not the vocalist was a female who usually performed a few tunes each set in an outfit that was meant to attract attention. He would later play for Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald. You need to keep what your doing behind them to a minimum and you have to really step on the time [i.
No surprises back there; just be consistent. Blossom is one of a select group of musicians who also happen to be singers who also happen to write the songs they [and others] sing or play, and do all three magnificently. After undergoing the many agonies associated with working for bad vocalists, when someone like Blossom comes along and lights up your day, you become a fan forever.
And so I have. On the day I hear from her death I am listening all day to her beautiful performances like "Put on a happy face" and "Georgie Fame". What a great artist she was!

Blossom Dearie is for me the personalisation of "my days of wine and roses". This way of singing and performing fails me these days. What a taste, what a sound. I know it's inappropriate, but I'm in love with Blossom. So much so, that she stays a regular on my two hour jazz show on Leighton Hospital Radio, here in Cheshire, England.
I'm saddened by the fact that I didn't discover the remarkable Ms Dearie a lot earlier in life, but I'm making up for that with collecting her cd's in serious numbers.. I'll never tire of her talent and the warmth of her persona that comes through every recording. Bless ya, Blossom! Blossom was the all time favorite booking.
I used to sell her CDs from the back of the Cabaret Room and listen to her silky smooth rendition of "My Attorney Bernie" and all the other great jazz greats she sang so well. I was her publicist for a while and it was my honor to work with someone as talented as the great Blossom Dearie. We don't have enough great jazz singers to be lending them out willy nilly to the "Sassenachs"!

In , Blossom Dearie decided to produce and create her own album. For one, she wanted more control over the session and sound. But she also wanted to experiment freely with the electric piano, a sound that had been taking over easy listening genres of the s. She ended up creating an album called Blossom Dearie Sings , but when she shopped it around to other labels, no one was interested.
Undeterred, she released the album herself, creating her own label called Daffodil Records no doubt inspired by her first name. Each of the Daffodil albums had a title, but they also had a number. Daffodil Volume III. Daffodil, Volume I. Over the years, Dearie had developed her own little songbook, consisting of not only her originals, but a group of her favorite standards to perform live.
She even released a compilation album in the s called Our Favorite Songs. Throughout the s, she would often return to these familiar songs that she had recorded at least one other time in the past, rerecording them on her new albums for Daffodil. First up, this is a song she first sang in in the key of B-flat on her album Blossom Dearie Sings Comden and Green.
However, vocal coaches at the time argued that her vocal tone was the result of "improper breathing". I have never been a singer who could stand up and sing like a theatrical singer. I sit down, and I've always used a microphone. I have a kind of microphone technique. Dearie lived in Paris, France, during the early s; here she met and in married Bobby Jaspar , a Belgian flautist and saxophonist.
