  • The attack also caused many of the unfriendly Native Americans to leave the area. Standish showed great courage and skill as a soldier but sometimes was too harsh with the Native Americans. This would make both the Native Americans and the members of the colony angry. By the s, Standish was leading a quiet life on his farm in Duxbury.

    Standish also served as a surveyor of highways, as Treasurer of the Colony from to In , his old friend Hobbamock, who had been part of his household, died and was buried on Standish's farm in Duxbury.

    Standish put Lieutenant William Holmes in charge of training the men. He died in his home in Standish's first wife, Rose, died in At the start of the Second World War he commissioned as an Ensign in the Naval Reserve in , and became an active duty officer in He transferred to a special Graphic Presentation Unit in and spent the last year of the Pacific theater as a combat artist.

    By the end of the war he had obtained the rank of Commander. He left active service in May and taught at the University of California, Santa Barbara from He returned to active duty in to to travel with Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd to Antarctica as part of "Operation Deepfreeze" to record images of the exploration. Backus returned to California and continued to paint.
