His was mostly an inner war, mostly fought alone and with a clearly defined enemy. Even in prison he lived under his father's shadow. The North Vietnamese were well aware of this and repeatedly tried to use John as a pawn in the constant propaganda war, but to no avail. A particularly moving image in the book is of Jack posting himself as close to the demilitarized zone as possible every Christmas for three years, standing alone and looking north in the direction of his captive son.
McCain and Salter's book does not dwell upon this or on any other relationship except for the immutable one between a soldier and his country. They quote the Code of Conduct for American Prisoners of War in its entirety, and if the reader is looking for deeper insights from John McCain, they will do only slightly better than the North Vietnamese did in obtaining his name, rank and serial number.
Instead, his prison experience is presented as a sort of epiphany in which McCain found not only the strength to survive, but a renewed determination to serve his country. By ending the book in , McCain deprives the reader of what really is the more interesting and controversial part of his life. Timberg, an Annapolis man and Vietnam veteran himself, covers the familiar ground of McCain's childhood, Navy career and captivity.
